Scream your way round Nemesis Reborn, brave The Smiler one more time, then be back at your own lodge with the kettle on inside half an hour. That’s the real argument for holiday parks near Alton Towers. You get the big day out, then a quiet place to flop afterwards, with your own kitchen, your own beds and a hot tub bubbling away on the decking.
The theme park sits above Alton village in the Staffordshire Moorlands, right on the doorstep of the Peak District.
That’s lucky, because the countryside around it is full of small lodge parks rather than giant resorts. Below are the ones we’d book ourselves, with the facts that matter: how long the run back takes, who they sleep, which welcome dogs and which have an indoor swimming pool.
Why stay on a park instead of an Alton Towers hotel?
Hotels on site put you closest to the gates, and for one night they’re brilliant fun. Over a longer family break, though, the sums work out rather differently.
- Self catering saves the most. Breakfast in your own kitchen and a packed lunch for the queue lines beats four restaurant meals a day.
- Space to spread out. Separate bedrooms and a lounge, so the little ones can go to bed while the adults stay up.
- Hot tubs. Twenty minutes in the bubbles does wonders for legs that have walked ten miles round a theme park.
- Dogs are welcome at most of the parks below, which no on site hotel will do.
- Somewhere to go on the rainy day, from an indoor pool and games room to woodland trails.
- Share it. Split a lodge between two families and the nightly cost drops hard.
Which holiday parks near Alton Towers should you book?
All six are real, bookable places to stay, and the times below are road times to the Alton Towers entrance, whether you’re booking a short break or a full week.
Quarry Walk Lodges
Freehay, Cheadle, Staffordshire – about 16 minutes by car – sleeps up to 6 – hot tubs – pets welcome

The closest of the six, and the one we’d pick first. Quarry Walk is tucked away off the beaten track in 46 acres of Staffordshire woodland, with log cabins and timber clad lodges set among peaceful trails full of wildlife. It won a Visit Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Tourism Award in 2026.
Open all year, with covered outdoor hot tubs and a 4.6 guest rating.
Sandybrook Lodges
Ashbourne, Derbyshire – about 23 minutes by car – sleeps up to 8 – hot tubs – pets welcome – indoor pool

Our pick for families who want a second day’s entertainment without getting back in the car. There’s an indoor heated pool, a sauna, a games room and a toddler’s play room, plus archery and crossbow to book. The jacuzzi is for over 16s only.
It’s located in the former grounds of a 19th century manor house outside Ashbourne, including its own pinetum and a walk through a secluded bluebell wood. Lodges sleep up to eight, ideal for two families travelling together.
Rudyard Lake Lodges
Near Leek, Staffordshire – about 32 minutes by car – sleeps up to 6 – hot tubs – pets welcome – fishing

Swedish lodges set in woodland on the edge of the Peak District, looking down over a meadow to Rudyard Lake. One three bedroom lodge here has a six person hot tub and covered outdoor dining, so you can eat outside whatever the sky is doing.
Walking, cycling, climbing, fishing and boating all start more or less at the door. A narrow gauge steam railway runs alongside the water, a gentle day out for anyone who’s had enough of coasters.
Rivendale Lodge Retreat
Ashbourne, Derbyshire – about 33 minutes by car – sleeps up to 8 – hot tubs – pets welcome – fishing

Lodges and treehouses set inside the Peak District National Park, with walks and cycle trails leading off the park and a dog wash by the entrance for the muddy aftermath.
The Tissington Trail is nearby for easy family cycling, and the Dovedale stepping stones make one of the best mornings out in the country. Rated 4.8.
Longnor Wood Holiday Park
Longnor, near Buxton, Derbyshire – about 35 minutes by car – sleeps up to 4 – hot tubs – pets welcome – adults only

Adults only, five star, and located high in the Peak District between Buxton and Bakewell. A range of one and two bedroom lodges and caravans come with private decking and central heating, and some have a covered hot tub outside.
If you’re doing the coasters as a couple rather than with children, this is the one.

Caravan, lodge or log cabin?

Most of the caravan parks near Alton Towers are touring and camping sites, where you bring your own tent, caravan or motorhome and book a pitch. They’re cheap and they’re close, but you’re cooking outside after a ten hour day on your feet.
What we book instead is the holiday home: a static caravan or a timber lodge that’s already there, heated, with the beds made up and a proper kitchen waiting. A static caravan costs less. A lodge gives you more room, better fittings and usually that hot tub on the decking. Log cabins sit somewhere in between.
Prefer to be under canvas? Several sites nearby keep touring pitches alongside their lodges, so a group can split between the two.
Is there a big seaside brand park near Alton Towers?
This one comes up constantly, and the honest answer is no. The big coastal names build where the beach is. Parkdean Resorts say their nearest park is Todber Valley in Lancashire, roughly 85 miles away and no sort of base for a day of rides.
Inland Staffordshire and Derbyshire are different country altogether. You trade the arcade and the clubhouse for acres of trees, a hot tub on the decking and a back road to the gates.
Parks with an indoor swimming pool near Alton Towers
Two of our six have their own pool, and those facilities earn their keep on the day the rain sets in.
Sandybrook Lodges near Ashbourne has a heated indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a games room and a play room for toddlers. Silver Trees on Cannock Chase has an indoor heated pool and tennis courts inside its own 20 acre nature reserve, where wild deer wander through the trees. It’s adults only, rated 4.9, and about 42 minutes away.
There’s a third worth counting: the Alton Towers Waterpark, with its flumes and rapids, stays open nearly all year, long after the coasters shut for winter.
What’s on at Alton Towers in 2026?
The big coasters
Nemesis Reborn is back and as brutal as ever, The Smiler keeps piling on the inversions, and Wicker Man throws fire at you from a wooden track. Oblivion still drops you into a hole in the ground. Rides open at 10am while the gates open earlier, so the first hour is the quietest all day.
With toddlers in tow
CBeebies Land is the biggest children’s area of any UK theme park, and 2026 brought the world’s first Bluey coaster, Bluey the Ride: Here Come the Grannies, which opened on 28 March. Add the Clangers rollercoaster, Hey Duggee and the Teletubbies and the under fives have a full day of fun on their own.
Scarefest, 26 September to 1 November 2026
Mazes, fog, and the park open until 9pm so you can ride Nemesis Reborn in the dark. This year’s new maze is Final Exhibit. It’s the busiest half term of the autumn, so book early!
The main season runs from mid March to the first week of November, with selected festive dates in December. Car parking is charged, and it’s cheaper booked in advance alongside your tickets. Check the official Alton Towers website before you travel, because dates and ride closures change.
When’s the best time to visit?
Making the most of the big day out
Stay within 40 minutes and the day works differently. Be at the gates for opening, come back for lunch if the little ones flag, then head out again for the evening rides.
Buy your tickets in advance rather than at the turnstiles, and add car parking at the same time. Pack the bag the night before. Nobody wants to hunt for swimming kit at 8am.
- Advance tickets, saved to your phone before you lose signal
- Car parking booked ahead for the day you’re going
- Waterproof coats, it’s high ground and the weather turns fast
- A spare change of clothes each for the water rides
- Trainers you don’t mind soaking, and wellies for Dovedale
- Swimming kit and towels for the Waterpark or your park’s pool
- Cool bag and a packed lunch from the lodge kitchen
- Card or change for the ride lockers
- Sun cream and hats, there’s no shade in most queues
- Dog lead, towel and bed if your park takes dogs
Travelling with another family? Splitting a lodge that sleeps eight is where the real saving lives.
Days out when you’ve had enough of rollercoasters
Steam trains run through the hidden valley on the Churnet Valley Railway near Leek, with Polar Express trips at Christmas. Ten minutes from the theme park, Dimmingsdale has millponds, stepping stones and shaded trails. Pack a picnic.
Further into the hills, the stepping stones at Dovedale and the climb to Thor’s Cave in the Manifold Valley are the walks everyone remembers. The Manifold Way is flat and buggy friendly if you’ve a toddler in tow.
Of the local attractions, Trentham Monkey Forest is the surprise: 140 free roaming Barbary macaques across 60 acres. If one theme park isn’t enough, Drayton Manor is under an hour south with Thomas Land for the under sevens.
Market day in Ashbourne fills a rainy morning, and the bar at a local village pub in Alton or Oakamoor does proper food.
