Planning a trip to Oakwood Theme Park at Canaston Bridge, near Narberth in Pembrokeshire? Wales’s biggest theme park, open since 1987, closed for good on 4 March 2025, and the gates are still shut in 2026.
Keep the trip in the diary, though, as the countryside around the old park is still one of the best family bases in West Wales, with Folly Farm’s zoo a short drive away, Tenby’s beaches 11 miles south and the Blue Lagoon water park right next door. If you’re looking for accommodation near Oakwood Theme Park, all the places to stay below are within half an hour of the old site.
Is Oakwood Theme Park still open in 2026?
No. Aspro Parks, the Spanish company that owned Oakwood from 2008, announced on 4 March 2025 that it wouldn’t reopen, blaming rising costs and falling visitor numbers. Megafobia, the wooden roller coaster that made the park famous, gave its last rides on 3 November 2024.
Since then the rides have been leaving, with Speed: No Limits and Treetops heading to Walygator parks in France. Local news has reported a resident’s bid to bring the park back, but nothing has been agreed, so plan your visit around the attractions that are open.
The good news? Everything else that made this corner of south Pembrokeshire great for families is still here.
Hotels near Oakwood Theme Park or a holiday park?
Most people searching for a hotel near Oakwood want the same thing: somewhere close by to stay with a family of four or five. Near the old park it’s mostly country inns, guest houses and bed and breakfast stays, with bigger hotels in Tenby, and a family of five often needs two hotel rooms and eats out every night. A hotel breakfast is lovely. A hotel bill for five people over a week, less so.
A static caravan works differently. You get two or three bedrooms, a kitchen, a lounge and decking, and you pay for the whole self catering holiday home rather than per hotel room. Cook tea when you get back while the children run off to the play area. Many parks add an indoor pool, a bar and a takeaway, and plenty are dog friendly. It’s like a holiday cottage stay, with the pool thrown in.
Sharing makes it even better value, as two families or a set of grandparents can split one holiday home between them.
