A huge coastal fortress on a rocky crag, packed with Anglo-Saxon, Norman and Victorian history.
Bamburgh Castle is a Grade I listed fortress on the Northumberland coast, built on a crag of volcanic dolerite above the North Sea. It covers nine acres of rocky plateau and is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country.
Tip: Prams and pushchairs aren't allowed in the State Rooms, so bring a baby carrier; there is a free shuttle buggy from the on-site car park up the hill.

The coastal rock face where James Hutton found evidence that the Earth is far older than people thought.
Siccar Point is a rocky coastal promontory in the Scottish Borders, near Cockburnspath, and one of the most important places in the history of geology. It is an IUGS Geoheritage Site. Here, gently sloping reddish-brown Devonian rock rests on dark, near-vertical Silurian rock beneath it. This meeting of two very different rock layers is known as Hutton's Unconformity.
Tip: Head for the promontory itself, where the unconformity is best seen in three dimensions; the ruined St Helen's Chapel is about a kilometre to the west.

A Tudor fort turned Arts and Crafts home on Holy Island, with seals, sea views and a tidal causeway.
Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century fort on Holy Island, reached across a tidal causeway. In 1901 Sir Edwin Lutyens turned it into an Arts and Crafts home, and inside you can see the stone vaults of the old Tudor gun battery. Outside, upturned boats serve as sheds, and there's a walled garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
Tip: Check the safe causeway crossing times before you travel, then park in the main island car park. The castle is a one-mile walk each way, and the approach is up steep cobbles, so wear sturdy footwear.

An Edwardian Borders mansion with a silver staircase, a marble dairy and 60 acres of formal gardens.
Manderston is an Edwardian stately home near Duns in the Scottish Borders, remodelled by architect John Kinross with no expense spared. The opulent state rooms include a ballroom and a marble hall, and the house has the only silver staircase in the world. You can also see the extensive "downstairs" domestic quarters, and the world's largest collection of Huntley & Palmers biscuit tins.

A Grade I listed Northumberland fortress with grand rooms, gardens, a torture chamber and ghost tours.
Chillingham Castle is a 13th-century fortress in Northumberland, listed Grade I. It stands on what was once the border between England and Scotland, and was repeatedly attacked and besieged. Edward I stayed here in 1298, and James I in 1617. Inside you can see its grand rooms, including the great hall, and walk through the gardens and grounds. There are lakes and a tearoom too.

A ruined red sandstone clifftop fortress facing the Bass Rock, with battlements you can climb.
Tantallon is a ruined 14th-century fortress near North Berwick, set on a clifftop headland above the Firth of Forth. A massive red sandstone curtain wall blocks off the promontory, with sea cliffs protecting the other three sides. It was home to the Red Douglas family and was besieged three times, the last by Cromwell's army.
Tip: Head up to the battlements for the views over the North Sea to the Bass Rock and its seabird colonies.

Alnwick Castle is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland and has been home to the Percy family since 1307. It began as a Norman stronghold and grew into a major fortress on the Anglo-Scottish border. Inside the keep, the State Rooms include the Library, Drawing Room, Saloon, Dining Room and China Gallery. You can also walk the battlements and see the Victorian Great Kitchen.
Tip: Broomstick Training needs a time-slot ticket, and Alnwick Castle tickets don't include The Alnwick Garden, which has its own website.

Scotland's national aviation museum, set on a wartime airfield with Concorde-era airliners, jets and a Vulcan bomber.
The National Museum of Flight is Scotland's national aviation museum, part of National Museums Scotland. It sits at East Fortune Airfield, just south of the village of East Fortune, in the original buildings of RAF East Fortune, a well preserved Second World War airfield. The whole site is a scheduled monument.

There wasn't much of a view from the caravan, but it was only a minutes walk to the stunning coastal path. The caravan was very comfortable and spacious.

We stayed at this lovely cottage recently and honestly, the owners were so friendly and thoughtful, it made our trip really special. The place itself is super charming-loved the traditional half-timbered look-and its got everything you need, like a powerful shower and a cosy living space. The bed was really comfy and the parking right next to the cottage was a lifesaver. Plus, its spotlessly clean and well heated. Perfect base for exploring Thaxted and the surrounding fields!

We had a really lovely stay at this place. The setting is super private and peaceful, which we loved. The owners were so friendly and always happy to help if needed, but they also respected our quiet time. The hot tub was a real highlight after cycling all day! One thing to note is that the cottage is right under Stansteds flight path, so theres quite a bit of noise from planes. It didnt bother us after a while, but if youre sensitive to noise, its worth considering. All in all, a really nice spot!
We had a fantastic stay! The house was super well equipped and kept us warm, which was a lifesaver on that rainy December day. The bath was lovely and the shower was perfect for quick rinses. Being on a flight path didnt bother us at all - honestly, its quite peaceful out here. Great spot if your dogs hate fireworks, as its so remote. Thanks a lot!

Very enjoyable break, plenty to do and quite a few restaurants in the area.
Small village, nice and quiet place. Not much to do around, especially if u have kids in teens age. I found out lots of historic places, beautiful views. Easy to shut down and relax. Unfortunately weather is crucial.
About bar/restaurant, food nice and quick. Staff really friendly and lovely. I found out they are overworked, really. Im working in hospitality for years and i feel sorry for them. Be a bartenders, waiter, cleaner and be on till is way to much, especially if there are place is full and only 2,3 peaple on shift. They need rise for all dutys they do.
Arrived Saturday evening. Found a couple of problems, ie no DVD player when one was advertised and the microwave didn't work. These were reported Sunday morning & were sorted out within half an hour. Great service on a Sunday. Didn't use on site bar or restaurant but they looked ok.

Great little holiday park, not loads to do but there's enough to have a lovely little holiday. The beach is great and the kids loved feeding the seals in Eyemouth.
