Step inside the thatched cottage in Alloway where Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, was born.
Burns Cottage is the birthplace of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, who was born here in 1759. Built by his father, William Burnes, in 1757, it is a long, low, thatched building of clay with four rooms, set on the main street of Alloway in South Ayrshire. It forms part of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.
Tip: Head for the kitchen alcove first to see the bed box where Burns was born.

Dumfries House is a Palladian country house near Cumnock in Ayrshire, built in the 1750s by the architects John and Robert Adam. It is known for still holding much of its original 18th-century furniture, including pieces specially commissioned from Thomas Chippendale. The house was saved for the nation in 2007 and now serves as the headquarters of The King's Foundation charity.

Robert Adam's clifftop castle sits in a country park of woods, beaches and play areas on the Ayrshire coast.
Culzean Castle is a clifftop castle on the Ayrshire coast, designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century for the 10th Earl of Cassillis. Inside, the dramatic Oval Staircase is the centrepiece, and there is a big collection of flintlock pistols and military swords. General Eisenhower was given an apartment at the top of the castle, and he stayed there several times.
Tip: The estate is big, so download the map or pick one up on arrival. Waymarked trails offer four different routes around the park.

Dean Castle is a 14th century stronghold in Kilmarnock, once home to the Boyd family, who were lords of Kilmarnock for over 400 years. Dundonald Castle is a fortified tower house on a hill above the village of Dundonald, between Kilmarnock and Troon in South Ayrshire. The Electric Brae is a famous gravity hill on the A719, south of Dunure and not far from Ayr in South Ayrshire. The road looks as though it runs uphill, yet a suitably free-running vehicle will slowly move off from a standstill, as if something were pulling it up the slope.
Tip: The illusion runs between the bend overlooking Croy railway viaduct and Craigencroy Glen, so that quarter-mile stretch is the part to head for.

Good place to visit
Lovely clean lodge, kids bedroom a bit small,nice big hot tub, beautiful views.The pillows and pillow cases looked old and they could do with new ones.Very basic (4 plates,4 glasses, 4 forks etc. nothing extra) no tea, coffee or sugar. It will be nice to have like a welcome pack. No towels, but we knew about that. Needs hooks on the back of the doors, special in the bathrooms
The Park was very well maintained and very quiet. Good location to visit local attractions. Sadly the Friarland Lodge did not meet expectations. There was a real lack of kitchen equipment. Lots of knocks and bumps, carpet into the lounge was coming away from the grip. The most frustrating thing was most of the blinds in the bedrooms were broken so either had to remain closed or had been ******* using the cords, really let it down. When we saw staff they were very friendly. I think the lodges just need some TLC and then would be a much higher rating.
Great holiday park well kept nice food in the on site restaurant and kids enjoyed the slots machines , lots of utensils in the kitchen and the lay out suited us being a family of 4 .

The welcome pack was a lovely touch, full of useful info and menus - really thought through. Our dogs loved the enclosed garden and the hot tub was just perfect for relaxing after days out. Sharon and Rob were quick to reply if we had any questions, which was appreciated. Thanks for the thoughtful extras for us and our pups - well definitely be coming back!

We stayed at a beautifully converted house that was super cosy and warm, perfect for a rainy December day! The bath was fantastic and the big shower was a bonus. The place is right on a flight path, but honestly, we barely noticed any noise, so dont let that put you off. Great spot if youve got dogs that hate fireworks - very peaceful and remote. We had such a lovely time! The lodge was stunning and really well equipped, perfect for a relaxing escape. The hot tub and decking area were just what we needed-private but with gorgeous views. All the staff we spoke to were super friendly and helpful, which made a big difference. The site was spotless and the kids loved the playpark, especially the little ones. Honestly, it was just what we needed after all the restrictions. Well definitely be coming back!

We stayed at Friarlands Lodge recently. Arriving late at night, we struggled a bit with directions, even with the instructions and had to go back to reception for help. The staff member there was really friendly and even drove us up to the lodge, which was a lovely touch. Once inside, we couldnt get enough of the beautiful decor - its truly stunning and tastefully done. The only real downside was that, for the first time ever, we forgot to bring towels! Had to dash to Tesco the next morning and spent £40 on four towels - bit of a pain! The outdoor space wasnt really our thing; the open decking meant everyone could see us while in the hot tub, which spoiled the privacy a bit. Weve been to Carrick Lodge twice and that place faces a field with gorgeous decor, so wed go back there instead. Overall, a lovely stay, just remember to bring your towels unless privacy isnt a big deal for you!
We just got back from an amazing week at Goddards Mead. The cottage has everything you could want and more. The hosts are super friendly and make you feel right at home. Even on a busy farm, its such a peaceful retreat. Loved it!

We stayed at Goddard's Mead recently and truly felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. Rob and Sharon have done a wonderful job restoring this historic building with care and attention. Bonnie was lovely too! The place has everything you need for a relaxing stay and the location is perfect for exploring Essexs charming villages and towns. Definitely worth taking a walk around Thaxted and soaking up the history. Highly recommend!

Would 100% recommend Crofthead Holiday Park to anyone! Our holiday was great from start to finish. The whole family absolutely loved it. There’s plenty to do around Ayr also if you’re wanting to head out for the day! The hot tub was so relaxing. There was even a great park next to the reception for the kids! The views from the park are fantastic also. The lodge we stayed in was immaculate. It was also a lot bigger than we expected with plenty of storage. Also came with a washing machine which was an added bonus as we managed to do some washing throughout our stay and dry it on the airers which saved a massive load of washing when we got home (it’s the little things in life haha). We can’t wait to visit again!
