Robert Adam's clifftop castle sits in a country park of woods, beaches and play areas on the Ayrshire coast.
Culzean Castle is a clifftop castle on the Ayrshire coast, designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century for the 10th Earl of Cassillis. Inside, the dramatic Oval Staircase is the centrepiece, and there is a big collection of flintlock pistols and military swords. General Eisenhower was given an apartment at the top of the castle, and he stayed there several times.
Tip: The estate is big, so download the map or pick one up on arrival. Waymarked trails offer four different routes around the park.

Burns Cottage is the birthplace of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, who was born here in 1759. Built by his father, William Burnes, in 1757, it is a long, low, thatched building of clay with four rooms, set on the main street of Alloway in South Ayrshire. It forms part of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.

A South Ayrshire road where cars seem to roll uphill, thanks to a clever optical illusion.
The Electric Brae is a famous gravity hill on the A719, south of Dunure and not far from Ayr in South Ayrshire. The road looks as though it runs uphill, yet a suitably free-running vehicle will slowly move off from a standstill, as if something were pulling it up the slope.
Tip: The illusion runs between the bend overlooking Croy railway viaduct and Craigencroy Glen, so that quarter-mile stretch is the part to head for.

Dumfries House is a Palladian country house near Cumnock in Ayrshire, built in the 1750s by the architects John and Robert Adam. We didnt try the spa or dine in because we were a bit nervous about sitting inside, so we went for takeaway instead. Some of the food was lovely, but honestly, the chips were just frozen, which felt a bit disappointing for a place claiming five stars. The bistros quite small, but the view of the sea is stunning. Wed come back!

We recently stayed at Goddard's Mead and were genuinely impressed. Rob and Sharon have done a fantastic job transforming this historic place and their warm welcome made us feel right at home. Bonnie was lovely too! The location is perfect for exploring Essex, especially if you enjoy wandering around charming villages like Thaxted with its rich history. Everything you need for a chilled-out stay is here and wed definitely recommend it for a relaxing break.

We just got back from a four-night stay at this cosy cottage and honestly, we loved it! The owners were super friendly but never intrusive, which was perfect. The fenced garden was great for our dog to run around safely. Everything inside was well-equipped - we even enjoyed a BBQ one evening. The hot tub was a real highlight! We had a wonderful stay at Bennane Shore Holiday Park. The location is absolutely amazing with stunning views along the coast and breathtaking sunsets. And, with binoculars, we could see seals every night from the decking of our lodge! The lodge itself - Kintyre - was great. The living area and kitchen was like a proper home from home and the bedrooms were comfortable and spacious too. We could happily have stayed longer than the week we had booked and will definitely visit again.
Our daughters (aged 10) loved seal spotting, playing on the private beach and playground and scootering up and down the Park. And it is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area which has some brilliant family days out. The food at the Bistro was freshly cooked and delicious and the staff were all professional, friendly and helpful. We didn't use the spa facilities - other than the steam room - but enjoyed using the pool every day with our children and everything was spotless.
We would definitely recommend this holiday park are already planning our next visit!

The site was easy to find and had plenty to do if your happy to travel a few miles. We had a nice view out to over the Firth of Clydd .
