Beach lovers will also be spoilt for choice as the world-renowned English Riviera is also within easy reach.

Its miles of gently undulating cliffs make for some spectacular coastal walks whilst the plethora of soft, sandy beaches are the perfect way to while away an afternoon.

The local area also has an incredible gastro scene, playing host to celebrity chefs, quality local producers and superb independent local eateries.

The cottage was lovely and really well placed for what we needed, quiet and peaceful. The hot tub was a definite highlight! Owners were super friendly without being overbearing. They've got it just right!

We had a great stay at this cosy cottage! The place was spotless and well stocked, making us feel right at home. Loved the easy access to dog walks right outside and meeting the farm animals, especially Penelope the pig! The host was super friendly and quick to reply. Definitely coming back, such good value!

We had an awesome stay at this cosy little cottage. It’s perfectly tucked away, so peaceful but still close to shops and stuff. The hot tub was such a treat and the underfloor heating made everything super comfy. Rob, Sharon and Bonnie are lovely hosts. Can’t wait to return!

We had a lovely short break over half term, though it went by way too fast! Definitely wishing we’d booked a full week instead of just Monday to Friday. The lodge itself was one of the nicest places we’ve stayed in; really comfy and well-kept. The only downside was the lack of facilities on the site, but with so much to do outside, it didn’t really matter. We spent our days exploring and there’s plenty to see rain or shine. Knightsayers in Tiverton is worth a visit if the weather’s good and the woodl and walks are simply beautiful. The Keep in Dorchester and Fleet Air Museum are perfect for history buffs or plane enthusiasts. We’d love to go back!

We absolutely loved our stay here! The location is stunning and feels really private, which was perfect for relaxing. The owners are super friendly and always there if you need anything, but they respect your space. The hot tub was a real highlight after a long day cycling-so relaxing! Only thing to keep in mind is that the cottage sits right under Stansted’s flight path, so there’s quite a bit of aircraft noise. Took us a couple of hours to get used to it, but it didn’t ruin our trip at all. We’d definitely return!

We stayed at this lovely cottage and loved how peaceful it was - perfect for us. The hot tub was a real highlight and the owners were so helpful without being intrusive. They really nailed it!

We spent a week here from the 15th to 22nd July with our two little dachshunds and they loved every second. They made friends with other pups in the village of Thaxted, which was adorable to watch. The cottage itself is really charming, especially the hot tub - perfect for those scorching days when the water cooled just right. The hosts were super friendly and made us feel really welcome. It was nice seeing their horses being taken out each day and even though it's near Stansted’s flight path, we enjoyed watching the planes land. Would definitely come back!

We had a fantastic stay! The owners were super friendly and really helpful when the storm knocked out the power. The place was spotless, warm and well equipped. Our dog loved the garden and we enjoyed the hot tub! Great experience!

Overall, we had a lovely stay! The place was spotless and we were really impressed with the cleanliness. Only minor hiccup was finding an acrylic nail in one bathroom, but it didn’t ruin the trip. In fact, two friends booked after seeing our pics and hearing about it!

Date of stay: 24th January 2025
Our stay at the lodge was honestly fantastic. We were in number 15, a spacious three-bedroom that’s pet-friendly, with a hot tub and it really felt like a cosy home away from home. The place was modern, well-maintained and had a lovely vibe. We loved how peaceful and quiet everything was, especially when we sat outside with the cushions out on the furniture. The weather was perfect for relaxing outdoors! A little heads up - we did notice there was no hand soap or washing up liquid provided and only one bin liner, so make sure to bring your own. It seemed a bit odd not to have hand soap, maybe an oversight? The cleanliness overall was good, but we did spot some tiny issues like a bit of mould in the grout of the bath and shower panel. Nothing major, but it did knock the score down a tad. We had a toddler with us and although there isn’t a play park on-site, there’s one within walking distance. We didn’t go, as most days we explored the area instead. There’s so much to do! Definitely recommend heading to Canonteign Falls - it’s a must-see. Just a note, this isn’t a site packed with facilities like playparks or entertainment, so you’ll need a car. The location is quite secluded, but that’s part of the charm. All in all, it was exactly what we were after - a peaceful, beautiful break with lovely walks nearby and loads to see within an hour’s drive. We’d happily come back and would definitely suggest it to friends and family. Great spot!

Really enjoyed the walk, the dogs loved exploring the fields and the place was quite charming.
Sam, Caerphilly
Date of stay: 13th January 2025
We noticed the coconut cover around the hot tub could use a refresh and some extra length for better privacy, which would make relaxing much easier. Also, the decking rails need a good treat with mould remover, as once the green mould takes hold, it’s tricky to get rid of. Just some small tweaks that could save hassle later. It’s a bit frustrating trying to unwind when you’re doing handyman stuff all the time!

We had a fabulous break here as a family of 4. Kids ages 8 and 5 and the dog. The lodge itself was absolutely beautiful and the hot tub was the highlight. The staff are so friendly and welcoming . I arrived super early as my plan was to explore before checking in however my daughter wasn’t feeling well at all and we took the chance to ask if early checking was an option . I couldn’t believe how easy it was I explained the situation and I had my keys in minutes and the little one tucked up in bed . Thank you very much for that . The hot tub was checked everyday by a lovely man who gave us so much information about the best beaches and things to visit . He had a dog named Myrtle that my kids adored. The site itself however in the middle of nowhere is situated in the middle of a housing estate but there is a local shop,Indian restaurant and chippy. Supermarkets are a 15 min drive away . This is an ideal base to stay to visit places . You are 30-40 mins away from nearly every beach. A car is a must if you are staying here and planing to go places as nothing around within walking distance that we found other an a short woodland walk that was full of flies. We booked looking for a quiet chilled experience as we wanted to completely unwind and that is exactly what we got and enjoyed.
Malcolm
Staff very good, always helpful and willing to go out of their way to make sure that everything is okay.
James
I really enjoyed my staff at hornbeam. We stayed for a long weekend. The lodge was very nice, clean and had all amenities. The site was quiet so if you want a piece full break Hornbeam is an ideal location.
Andrew
Excellent place for a holiday break, there are many places in the area worthwhile visiting, I highly recommend the donkey sanctuary. My wife and I will definitely be returning in the future.
