Mersea Island sits low and flat at the mouth of the Blackwater Estuary, about nine miles south of Colchester, with salt marsh in the creeks, oyster boats on the mud and a long line of painted beach huts along the West Mersea shore. There’s one road on. It crosses the marsh on a causeway called the Strood, and at the biggest high tides the sea simply covers it.
So plan round the tide first and the park second. Both of the Mersea Island holiday parks on our listings sit at East Mersea, the quieter end, a short walk from the sand and the country park. Five more seaside parks on the Essex coast, around Brightlingsea, St Osyth and Clacton-on-Sea, are within about 35 minutes by car, and we compare all seven below.

Two of them, both at the quiet east end and both with hot tub accommodation. Tap a column heading to sort the table.

5 mins by car | Fen Lane | sleeps up to 8 | hot tubs | pets welcome | lodges

Turn down Fen Lane just past the Dog & Pheasant pub and you’ll find this Away Resorts park tucked between open fields and the shore. The Muddy Duck clubhouse has views out over the Blackwater and seasonal family entertainment, while the facilities include an indoor heated pool, an adventure play area and an arcade. Our four holiday homes run from luxury caravans to one with a private hot tub. The pool closes in winter, so check dates for a late autumn break.
A regular guest put it simply on Tripadvisor in September 2026: “Right on the beach and next to a very quiet nature reserve.”
5 mins by car | Church Lane | sleeps up to 8 | hot tubs | pets welcome | lodges

Bigger and busier, with 37 holiday homes on our listings. Swimming comes first: an indoor heated pool for any weather, a heated outdoor one in summer and a toddlers’ water play station. Then come kids’ clubs, an adventure playground, a multi-sports court, an entertainment venue, a shop and the Boathouse Bar & Restaurant, so you can go days without driving.
You reach the sand straight from the park, which is handy for crabbing and shoreline fishing. One listing gives its 2026 season as 15 March to 8 November.
31 mins by car | near Clacton-on-Sea | sleeps up to 8 | pets welcome | fishing | lodges

Inland and peaceful, set round a fishing lake. Its indoor heated pool opens all year, there’s an outdoor one in summer, and you can eat at the Lakeside Tavern or grab fish and chips from the takeaway. Kids’ clubs with organised activities, an adventure playground and an arcade round off the facilities, with 30 homes on our listings.
32 mins by car | Brightlingsea | sleeps up to 6 | pets welcome | lodges

Here’s the odd one. Brightlingsea faces the country park across the River Colne, yet by road it’s 18 miles round. This small park on the Essex Sunshine Coast has six holiday homes on our listings, including two bedroom caravans, and the best guest rating of the seven at 4.6. In summer the foot ferry links the two in minutes!
35 mins by car | St Osyth | sleeps up to 10 | pets welcome

Walk straight onto miles of sand from this beachfront park. Next door, Martello Beach holds the leisure complex with an arcade, a bar, a restaurant, a show venue and a heated indoor swimming pool. Some caravans have one bedroom with a king-size bed and en suite, which suits a couple nicely.
35 mins by car | St Osyth | sleeps up to 10 | pets welcome

The liveliest pick. The refurbished entertainment venue has a stage for cabaret, plus discos, games and a children’s club for 0 to 14s, while outside there’s a heated pool, a patio with big screens and barbecues, an adventure playground and a football pitch. Bowlingo and pool tables cost extra.
35 mins by car | near Clacton-on-Sea | sleeps up to 8 | pets welcome | lodges

With 47 holiday homes, it has the most accommodation on our listings in the area. Indoor and outdoor swimming share a large water flume, and the facilities run from kids’ clubs and multi-sports courts to an arcade.
Most of these parks also have holiday homes for sale, so ownership is a big part of park life and you’ll share the facilities with owners. Some take touring caravans and camping pitches too.
This is the one thing every visitor needs to know. The causeway carries the B1025 over the marsh, it’s the only road on or off, and at some high tides it’s completely submerged. West Mersea Town Council asks everyone to check the tide times before travelling and never to drive across while it’s underwater, because it can be a danger to life.
Look up the tide for your changeover day before you leave home. If high water lands near your arrival time, stop for lunch on the way and cross once it has dropped. By car, leave the A12 at junction 26 and follow the B1025.
Oysters have been harvested here since Roman times, and the Haward family has farmed them since the 1700s. Their Company Shed, a black weatherboard shack at 129 Coast Road, serves native and rock oysters and big seafood platters, and you bring your own bread. Harden’s 2026 guide lists it as open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, with wine from the local vineyard. Get there early in summer.
Skip the old West Mersea Oyster Bar, which Harden’s lists as closed.
Around 384 huts line the seafront between Seaview Avenue and Broomhills Road, in every shade of pastel. The city council rents the sites long term, all are taken and it doesn’t do holiday lets, so for a day in one, look for private owners who hire theirs out. The sandy shore in front is made for sandcastles and rock pooling.
At the eastern tip, where the Colne and Blackwater estuaries meet, Cudmore Grove covers over 102 acres of grassland, beach and sea wall with wide estuary views. It’s open 8am to dusk every day, even Christmas Day. You’ll find a bird hide over the pond, play areas, a weekend refreshment kiosk and toilets. Dogs are welcome under control, barbecues aren’t, and in winter large flocks of brent geese graze the fields.
Essex County Council’s all day parking is £6.55 from 1 June 2026, paid by card or the MiPermit app.
Established in 1985 on Rewsalls Lane, the vineyard has around ten acres and five grape varieties, and the brewery beside it has made local ales since 2005. Its own website shows it open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am with a café, and its Easter Beer Festival pours 35 local ales, ciders and wines. Check the vineyard website or call before a special trip.
From the edge of the country park, a little ferry hops across to Point Clear and Brightlingsea in about nine minutes. It carries up to 12 passengers plus bikes, buggies and dogs, and Brightlingsea Harbour runs it seven days a week from April to September. Book online in the low season, or you won’t get on.
It doesn’t run in late autumn or winter.
Britain’s oldest recorded town is about 25 to 30 minutes up the B1025, depending on the tide.
Historic England calls it the largest Norman keep in existence. It stands on the base of the Roman Temple of Claudius.
A full day out at Stanway, on the edge of town, so it fits nicely on arrival or departure day.
Cafés, the high street and Castle Park make a good rainy afternoon in north Essex.
For sailing, it’s August. Mersea Week ran from 8 to 14 August in 2026, and the town regatta followed on 15 August. For calm sand and quiet roads, choose September instead.
Sharing a caravan or lodge with another family cuts the cost of a short break.
