Hayling Island is flat, breezy and almost surrounded by water, with Langstone Harbour on one side, Chichester Harbour on the other and about five miles of shore facing the Solent. Kites and windsurf sails fill the sky off Beachlands on a windy afternoon. On a clear day you’ll see the low hills of the Isle of Wight behind them.
It’s a small island, so Hayling Island holiday parks are fewer than you might expect. Our listings have one Hayling Island holiday park, Mill Rythe, plus a handful more on the Chichester and Selsey side of the county border or a ferry ride away.
Here’s how they compare, who each one suits and what to do once you’ve unpacked.

Only one of these is on Hayling. Three more sit 20 to 40 minutes’ drive east in West Sussex, and three are across the water. Tap a column heading to sort the table.

The shore is shingle at the top, with long stretches of sand appearing as the tide drops, and Visit Hampshire lists Funland, golf, kitesurfing and the Blue Flag beach among the local attractions. Beachlands is the busy middle bit, where the little Hayling Seaside Railway, a 2ft gauge line, runs about a mile along the front to Eastoke Corner. Windsurfing is said to have started here too, when a 12-year-old called Peter Chilvers built a board with a free sail in 1958!
Havant Borough Council’s dog control order has seasonal restrictions in the bathing area at Central Beachlands, so read the signs. Keep away from the harbour mouths, where the council warns of strong tidal flow.
The old Hayling Billy railway ran about 5 miles from Havant from 1867 until the last passenger train in November 1963. Its trackbed is now a flat, traffic-free trail down the west side of Hayling Island. It’s great for bikes and buggies, with the harbour beside you all the way.
Oysters were farmed here until the 1970s. The old lagoons are now part of the RSPB’s Langstone Harbour reserve, where terns fish in the lagoons and brent geese gather in the colder months, with two small free car parks off the A3023.
Before you cross the bridge, stop at Langstone, where the Ship Inn sits on the water’s edge in an 18th century grain store and the Royal Oak stands beside the old mill. Rain? Staunton Country Park near Havant has a farm, and Portsmouth’s waterfront is a short drive away.
Golfers should pack the clubs, because Hayling Golf Club has been voted among the top 100 courses in the UK, and Funland at Beachlands keeps the arcade crowd happy.
