Silloth faces west across the Solway Firth, and on a clear evening the sun drops behind the hills of southern Scotland while the tide slides out over miles of shining sand. Behind the promenade sit a huge seafront lawn and a grid of wide Victorian streets, with shrimp boats still working from the dock. It’s flat, quiet and made for slow walks.
Two of the Silloth holiday parks are on the edge of this seaside town in north west Cumbria, and four more are a short drive along the coast or inland. Here’s how the six on our listings compare, closest first.

It looks next door on a map, right across the firth in Scotland. There’s no ferry or bridge, though, so the drive goes round via Gretna, about 71 miles and well over an hour and a half. It’s a lovely spot for a caravan holiday in Scotland, just not a base for Silloth.

Stanwix Park Holiday Centre, at Greenrow, is the big all rounder and an AA Holiday Centre of the Year. Self catering apartments and caravan holiday homes run from Silver to Platinum grades on 3, 4 or 7 night breaks, it’s open all year, and pet friendly homes take up to two pets per booking.

Closest to the centre, Solway spreads over 130 acres of parkland beside the firth, and it’s the pick in Silloth if you want a hot tub on your deck. Check in is from 4pm. One recent TripAdvisor reviewer mentioned WiFi was included, and several booked pool sessions ahead. We’ve written more about things to do at Solway.

At Port Carlisle the line of Hadrian’s Wall passes right by the park, with gold-graded caravans, a brand new clubhouse and a play park. Carlisle is 12 miles away. One caravan is listed as no pets, so check before booking with a dog.
We list holiday homes, but plenty of people search for pitches too.
The railway from Carlisle arrived in 1856, the dock followed, and Silloth grew into a Victorian resort built around The Green, 36 acres of former dunes with a paddling pool, putting, tennis courts and a woodland play area. Walk the promenade at dusk and you’ll see why Silloth Town Council says the sunsets were fine enough for Turner to record! A plinth on the foreshore marks about 11 miles to the top of Criffel, 16 to Dumfries and 19 to Skiddaw. Keep going past the old Cote lighthouse to Grune Point, but watch the tide, as the spit floods.
West Beach, past the dock, is sandy, backed by dunes and holds a Yellow Flag award. Local guides call it dog friendly all year and we found no council ban, but there are no facilities, and the current runs hard near the dock entrance. Take a picnic.
Silloth borders the Solway Coast National Landscape, the new name for the old Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
To stay right among the fells, see our Lake District holiday parks.
The Silloth Green events page lists a Vintage Rally in July, the Carnival in August and the Music and Beer Festival, in a marquee on The Green, in September. Dates change yearly.
