Glastonbury Tor is a conical hill rising from the Somerset Levels, topped by the roofless 15th-century tower of St Michael's Church. Excavations at the summit revealed the plans of two earlier churches on the site.
Tip: There is no parking at the Tor itself, so use the nearest fee-paying car park at Draper and Co on Chilkwell Street and walk, and keep your dog on a lead because sheep graze here.

Cheddar Gorge is a dramatic limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills, with cliffs up to 137 metres deep. A day ticket covers Gough's Cave, Jacob's Ladder and the Museum of Prehistory. Gough's Cave is where Cheddar Man, Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, was found, and its stalactites and stalagmites were shaped by an underground river.
Tip: Arrive before 11am, especially in school holidays and on bank holidays, to find a parking space easily. Booking day tickets online in advance also saves money.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, a World Heritage Site and one of Britain's best-known landmarks. The outer ring of huge sarsen stones, topped with lintels, was raised in the third millennium BC. It sits within a landscape dense with burial mounds and other Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments.

Glastonbury Abbey is the ruined remains of a monastery in Somerset. The ruins are a grade I listed building and scheduled monument, open as a visitor attraction. The abbey was founded in the early medieval period, enlarged in the 10th century and rebuilt after a fire in 1184. By the 14th century it was one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England.

Stourhead is a National Trust estate on the Wiltshire and Somerset border, with a Palladian mansion and one of the most famous landscape gardens in England. The garden was laid out in the 18th century around a large artificial lake, with classical temples, a grotto, the Palladian Bridge and the Gothic Cottage summerhouse beside the water. Rare and exotic trees add to the setting.

A Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion with Ham Hill stone walls, clipped yew gardens and parkland walks up to a hilltop tower.
Montacute House is a late Elizabethan mansion in South Somerset, completed around 1601 and built of golden local Ham Hill stone. Inside you can explore the ground floor, which is home to the rare Tournai Tapestry, and the Long Gallery is the longest in England and displays portraits as an outpost of the National Portrait Gallery.
Tip: Parking is free, and timed entry tickets are used on busier days, so check before you set off. The Ladies' Walk is a 45-minute climb with lovely views over the village.

Loved every moment, perfectly relaxing and just what we needed!
Wow, what a fantastic weekend we had! From the moment we arrived, we felt so at home. The lodge is beautifully modern and super luxurious and we loved the festive Christmas touches everywhere - it really added to the cosy vibe. The place is so well stocked; we appreciated the local cheese and bubbly waiting for us, such a nice touch. And a big thumbs up for how welcoming they were to our dog - treats, a tennis ball, dog bowls - he was made to feel just as special. The view from the lodge is simply breathtaking and knowing the entrance is gated made us feel secure throughout our stay. We got regular check-ins from the owners, which made us feel really looked after without being intrusive. The bed was massive and there were plenty of towels, so no complaints there. The only minor thing was the fridge - its pretty small with just a tiny freezer drawer. Were glad we didnt do a big supermarket shop beforeh and, or we mightve struggled for space. Nothing serious, just a heads up for anyone planning a longer stay. Honestly, if I could give it an 11 out of 10, I would! Stunning scenery, a lovely place to relax and the hot tub on the deck was the cherry on top. Were already talking about coming back soon!
We had a lovely stay at Goddard's Mead! Rob, Sharon and Bonnie really made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The buildings been beautifully converted, keeping its historic charm but with all the comforts you could need. The locations perfect for exploring Essex, especially if you enjoy wandering around Thaxted and nearby villages - so much history and stunning architecture. Wed definitely recommend it for a peaceful getaway!

We had an amazing stay at Tor View! The lodges are beautifully finished and everything feels really well thought out. The hot tub was just what we needed - clean, inviting and super relaxing after a day out. The location is so peaceful, with stunning views that made our getaway truly special. We had a lovely stay at Ditcheat Hill View. The lodges design was stunning and the panoramic views really are one of a kind. Rupert made us feel so welcome, nothing seemed like too much trouble. Everything was spotless and well-equipped. Definitely hoping to return soon!

Fantastic lodges, clearly a lot of thought, effort and expense has gone into them. The views are wonderful too and located really well for getting to cheddar, Wookey hole, Glastonbury, the coast etc. Everything is very professional but also a friendly touch too.

A really lovely lodge with stunning wide angle views across to Glastonbury Tor and beyond.
The accommodation was clean and well equipped, and the owners were friendly and clearly took pride in paying attention to the little details.
We found the location a great base for visiting Wells, Bath, Bristol, Cheddar/Wookey, the nearby coast, Stourhead and Longleat.
At the end of our exploring each day, it was so lovely to come back to base and chill in the hot tub and watch the sunset over the farmhouse.
We will certainly return to these lodges when we are back in the area and will be raving about it to friends and family in the meantime, no doubt.

We (four in the party) had a wonderful week In Tor View lodge. The lodge is very well equipped to a high standard and very modern to make a holiday in the lodges very comfortable. The view from the lodge is gorgeous and you can relax in the hot tub and take it all in.
The lodges on the farm at East Compton make them ideal for visiting Bath, Wells and Frome and there are numerous National Trust properties to visit within a few miles.
I would recommend Midsomer Lodges for high standard accommodation and a relaxing holiday.
Despite heavy rain it was mostly only late in the day so didn't spoil the holiday. Lots to see & do within easy reach. Great location.
The lodge is absolutely excellent the amount of detail and thought gone in to making you feel welcome and relaxed was second to none. We took our 2 dogs but I think if we decide to go again we wouldn’t take them, this is because there are no paths from the lodge to anywhere local and the public foot path we tried was dangerous, over grown and looked like it hasn’t been used in years. We ended up using the bridle path which was much better but options were very limited. The facilities for the dogs was brilliant I cannot fault that.
We tried to walk to a nearby pub but was being refurbished oh dear”. All in all a very relaxing lodge with excellent views, and sunsets.
Absolutely stunning lodge with views to die for!! They really have thought of everything. We had a lovely weekend. So peaceful waking up to the sound of baby lambs in the field next to us and birds singing. We have booked to come back in January, definitely one of our favourite places we have stayed. 5 star all the way..?
What an amazing stay! The lodge and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. The lodge has everything you need and the host even left a little complimentary gift which was a lovely touch! My partner and I were both so sad to leave, we will be back!

We went for a long weekend to celebrate my friends birthday. The lodge is fantastic. I can’t think of anything that wasn’t just perfect for us. The host was welcoming and helpful. The views are amazing and it was superb to be able to sit in the hot tub and look at the fantastic views. We can’t recommend enough.
