We had a fantastic weekend stay and really enjoyed our time here. The place was just what we needed and we’re already planning to return. Our dogs had a blast with the underfloor heating and the garden - Luna even wagged her tail so much she strained it! Definitely a win for both pups and humans alike. Can't wait to come back!

We stayed at Goddard's Mead and honestly, Rob, Sharon and Bonnie made us feel so welcome. The building’s been beautifully converted, preserving its historic charm but still feeling cosy and modern inside. The location’s perfect for exploring Essex, especially Thaxted and the surrounding villages - so worth wandering around! It’s a peaceful spot, great for relaxing and we really appreciated the warm greeting. Definitely recommend for a laid-back getaway!

We stayed at a lovely, well-equipped house that was super cosy, especially on that rainy December day! The bath was fantastic and the shower was big enough for a proper rinse. The place is right under a flight path, but honestly, it didn’t bother us at all. Perfect for dogs scared of fireworks since it's in the middle of nowhere. Really beautiful conversion, thanks a lot!

We had a really lovely week at Hawkshead Lodge, especially enjoying the hot tub after a day out. The lodge itself was spotless and had everything we needed - it’s clear they put effort into making it comfortable. We’d definitely come back out of season, no question. One thing to note is that the lodge isn’t quite as private as the website makes out; more lodges have popped up around, so the secluded vibe is a bit less than expected. Still, the view of Scaffell was absolutely breathtaking, with those changing colours always a treat to watch. A small thing that would help is better signage for the reception, which is tucked inside Herdwick’s Bistro - we had a bit of a struggle finding it at first. Also, it’d be great if there was a folder or some info on local walks and hikes, as the chat at the bar wasn’t particularly helpful, despite him living locally for years. Overall, a lovely last-minute getaway in a very comfy lodge!

We had a lovely escape with our partner and there's plenty of space for the kids if we decide to bring them next time. Definitely a versatile spot for everyone!
Emma
Date of stay: 9th March 2025
When we first arrived at the lodge, it looked alright, but sadly, the cleanliness was disappointing. The sofas were heavily stained and in need of a proper clean and the carpets looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in ages with multiple spillage marks. The oven was filthy, clearly needing a deep scrub and the fridge had this strange smell that was pretty off-putting. WiFi was a bit hit-and-miss, so we couldn’t always stream Netflix, which was a shame. The hot tub was another let-down; it kept losing heat and there was no way to adjust the temperature, so we didn’t get to enjoy it for long. On Saturday, we had a boiler problem, but getting hold of someone was a nightmare - phone calls kept going to answerphone until 10:20am when I finally spoke to someone at the bar. The location was nice, not overlooked, but overall, we won’t be coming back.

We stayed at this place recently and it really was perfect for some downtime. The hot tub was a lovely bonus and the setting is so peaceful. The hosts are friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend if you need a break!

We had a lovely stay! The lodge was spotless and had a really cosy feel inside. The beds in both rooms were super comfy, which made a big difference. We stayed in the Loweswater and loved how private it was, especially with the hot tub, which was always clean and checked daily. The views are stunning, facing south and perfect for relaxing after walks. There are so many great trails nearby, we’re definitely coming back!

Date of stay: 14th February 2025
We had such a lovely stay! The owners are genuinely warm and thoughtful, making everything feel so welcoming. The cottage itself is adorable, with its charming timber framing and a really good shower that’s perfect after a day out. The bed was super comfy and the cosy kitchen/living area was perfect for relaxing. Parking right next to the cottage was a real bonus and the place was spotless and well-heated. Lovely walks nearby, especially towards Thaxted with its beautiful half-timbered houses and windmill. We’d definitely come back!
Emma
Date of stay: 12th February 2025
We stayed in a big, comfy lodge with a private hot tub, which was lovely. But honestly, some small things could be improved - cobwebs on the light fixtures and the large shower head wasn’t even connected! The free-standing bath had pretty poor hot water, often needing a kettle and the gas cooker wasn’t great either. No microwave, which was a bit of a pain since the Bistro was closed most of our stay.
Emma
Date of stay: 8th February 2025
Really enjoyed our stay, the place had everything needed!

We had such a lovely stay at Goddard's Mead! Rob and Sharon really put a lot of effort into converting this historic building with care and their warm welcome made us feel right at home. Bonnie was adorable too! The place is perfect for relaxing and the location is fantastic-easy to explore Thaxted and the nearby villages with their charming streets and interesting history. Definitely worth a visit!

Date of stay: 15th January 2025
We had a fantastic stay at this charming little cottage. It really has everything you'd need, so no need to bring much at all. We overloaded the car because the place is so well equipped! The welcome pack was a thoughtful touch, packed with useful info and menus. The owners, Sharon and Rob, were quick to reply if we had any questions, which was great. Our dogs loved the enclosed garden and the hot tub was just the icing on the cake. Thanks for a lovely break-we'll definitely be back!

Date of stay: 29th December 2024
We felt right at home, but brought our own cleaning stuff and toiletries because the place only had the basics. The beds were super comfy with nice bedding. A small cupboard for food would be handy, but it’s manageable.

Date of stay: 20th December 2024
We had such a lovely stay at the lodge! It was spotless and felt really cosy, like a home away from home. Everything we needed was there-kitchen gadgets, a good shower, heating, a fire, TV and of course the hot tub, which was a real treat. Honestly, we didn’t want to leave and are already planning our next visit. Thanks for a fantastic holiday!

Date of stay: 19th November 2024
We had an excellent stay at this lovely cottage. It’s perfectly tucked away, offering privacy, yet not too far from local shops and pubs. The hot tub was a real treat and the underfloor heating made everything super cosy. Rob, Sharon and Bonnie were such welcoming hosts. Can’t wait to return!
Vari
Beautiful caravan (Buttermere) and great location, very close to Lake which is walking distance. No shop onsite, and very little restaurant options for dinner in walking distance, still need the car. (Family of 4)
Emily
We loved our stay. Our dog loved it too and never normally settles when we’re away but she was right at home! The decked area was secure with a gate which made our lives so much easier! Clean, spacious, great location, lovely hot tub we will definitely be back!
Joanne
Excellent 3 night stay in the Buttermere lodge. Nice and quiet even though it was weekend. We didn't use the car at all as there's plenty to do within walking distance, and it was lovely to get in the hot tub in the evening. We'll definitely be back.
Shona
We loved our time at this lodge - spacious, decorated to a very high standard, quiet and not too far a drive to Keswick. The lodge was stunning and we received a very warm welcome from Laura and Dave Would definitely recommend.
Kirsty
Had amazing week (from 8th July 22) staying in "Buttermere Lodge". We had been searching for the perfect place to bring our dog. We have found a gem of a place. The holiday park is ideally located between Keswick and Cockermouth. And near the beautiful Bassenthwaite Lake. Our accommodation was modern, clean .... just perfect. It had everything you need for a self catering place. Supermarkets are in Cockermouth so we got stocked up. The on site guys, Laura and Dave were on hand if you needed them, and so friendly and helpful. We loved the hot tub!. We are going to book for next year. For anyone visiting, look after the accommodation and keep it nice for every visitor. Herdwick Croft is currently building a bistro at the front which will be an added bonus. There are lovely walks to go on around the site if you have a dog (or not). I would not hesitate to recommend Herdwick Croft lodges. Can't wait to come back! Obviously we weren't there to camp so cannot comment on the site or facilities (although the site where the caravans, tents were, looked nice). Some earlier reviews may say towels weren't provided. They were!. Although take your own for the hot tub. The lodge even had a washer/dryer, iron, small ironing board, clothes airer, hairdryer, and fully equipped kitchen. It was perfect!
George
excellent lodge nice and quiet location with plenty nearby activities staff really friendly will definitely go back
Kelly
Gorgeous place nestled in between one of the lakes and a distillery. Great for walkers and other lakes within 20/30 min drive.
Reece
Really enjoyed our holiday at herwick croft, the lodge was immaculate and had great views over skiddaw. Hot tub was brilliant too. Staff were friendly.
Zoe
Lovely stay at herdwick Croft. Perfect location for visiting local attractions. Nearest shop is a 10 minute drive. The only recommendation I would have would be to supply more toilet rolls, bin bags and dishwasher tablets as only 1 supplied for a weeks stay. Also some small toiletries in the bathroom would be handy as no hand wash was supplied.
Nicholas
Great location and accommodation was very comfortable - no issues. We enjoyed the hot tub which was clean and well maintained. Would definitely return.
Victoria
It was wonderful - thank you for having us. See you next year!
Claudia
Herdwick Croft is a lovely quiet site, with beautiful surroundings. It sits on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake and it is just a short walk down to the water. There isn’t any restaurant/bar on site yet, however it is in the process of being built. There were recommendations of places to eat and drink within a short walk or drive so that wasn’t an issue for us. I can definitely recommend The Wheatsheaf Inn, the food was fantastic!
Susan
Lovely small park set with gorgeous views
Carl
Stayed at the buttermere lodge for 7 nights and will definitely be returning to herdwick Croft in the future. The lodge and hot tub were clean and in good condition. The surrounding areas were stunning with a short drive to Keswick and beautiful walks. Perfect for couples, families and dogs.
Lewis
Loved the Crummock Vip it had everything we needed. Nice quiet location but also close to places we wanted to visit. Staff on the site were very helpful and only a txt away if needed. Will be nice when the bistro/bar is finished which im sure we will be back to enjoy.
