Visitor Reviews of Herdwick Croft

Date of stay: 24th March 2025
We had a really lovely week at Hawkshead Lodge, especially enjoying the hot tub after a day out. The lodge itself was spotless and had everything we needed - it’s clear they put effort into making it comfortable. We’d definitely come back out of season, no question. One thing to note is that the lodge isn’t quite as private as the website makes out; more lodges have popped up around, so the secluded vibe is a bit less than expected. Still, the view of Scaffell was absolutely breathtaking, with those changing colours always a treat to watch. A small thing that would help is better signage for the reception, which is tucked inside Herdwick’s Bistro - we had a bit of a struggle finding it at first. Also, it’d be great if there was a folder or some info on local walks and hikes, as the chat at the bar wasn’t particularly helpful, despite him living locally for years. Overall, a lovely last-minute getaway in a very comfy lodge!

We had a lovely escape with our partner and there's plenty of space for the kids if we decide to bring them next time. Definitely a versatile spot for everyone!

When we first arrived at the lodge, it looked alright, but sadly, the cleanliness was disappointing. The sofas were heavily stained and in need of a proper clean and the carpets looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in ages with multiple spillage marks. The oven was filthy, clearly needing a deep scrub and the fridge had this strange smell that was pretty off-putting. WiFi was a bit hit-and-miss, so we couldn’t always stream Netflix, which was a shame. The hot tub was another let-down; it kept losing heat and there was no way to adjust the temperature, so we didn’t get to enjoy it for long. On Saturday, we had a boiler problem, but getting hold of someone was a nightmare - phone calls kept going to answerphone until 10:20am when I finally spoke to someone at the bar. The location was nice, not overlooked, but overall, we won’t be coming back.

We had a lovely stay! The lodge was spotless and had a really cosy feel inside. The beds in both rooms were super comfy, which made a big difference. We stayed in the Loweswater and loved how private it was, especially with the hot tub, which was always clean and checked daily. The views are stunning, facing south and perfect for relaxing after walks. There are so many great trails nearby, we’re definitely coming back!

Date of stay: 12th February 2025
We stayed in a big, comfy lodge with a private hot tub, which was lovely. But honestly, some small things could be improved - cobwebs on the light fixtures and the large shower head wasn’t even connected! The free-standing bath had pretty poor hot water, often needing a kettle and the gas cooker wasn’t great either. No microwave, which was a bit of a pain since the Bistro was closed most of our stay.

We experienced constant internet drops, which was really annoying. The poor TV channels and streaming issues made everything so frustrating!
Jamie
Date of stay: 29th December 2024
We felt right at home, but brought our own cleaning stuff and toiletries because the place only had the basics. The beds were super comfy with nice bedding. A small cupboard for food would be handy, but it’s manageable.
Emma
Date of stay: 21st November 2024
Honestly, we weren’t too impressed. The prices seemed a bit steep for the time of year and it felt like the owners weren’t too bothered as long as they got the cash. The hot tub definitely wasn’t as private as we hoped and the view in the pictures isn’t quite how it looks in real life - too many caravans around. Thought it was a lodge, but nope! Wouldn’t go back.
Emma
Date of stay: 6th November 2024
The lodge was really lovely, especially the hot tub which was perfect after a day out. The place was spotless and well-equipped, with a cosy, warm bedroom and a peaceful outdoor space. Only downsides were the smoke alarm bleeping, WiFi issues and a non-working TV, which was a bit frustrating.

We really enjoyed our stay at this lodge. The bed was super comfy and the bedding felt lovely and fresh. The outdoor decking was perfect for relaxing and enjoying the space. Kitchen equipment was plentiful, including a dishwasher and washing machine, which was handy. WiFi was reliable too. We'd definitely come back again!

The lodge was really lovely and ideal for our one-year-old. We did wish there were some small touches like hand soap, tea and coffee. Also, the mattress in the main bedroom could do with replacing. Still, a nice stay!

Date of stay: 29th September 2024
We stayed here for a week and honestly, we were pretty impressed. The site itself looks lovely and the surrounding area is peaceful, perfect for a break. Our lodge in the Broadwater (Minster) section was spotless, fresh and had everything we could need. The hot tub was a real treat, though it could’ve been a tad warmer since the weather’s turning chillier now. We were a bit disappointed that the bar and bistro weren’t open during the week because of winter hours, but we did manage to grab a waffle on the Sunday afternoon-super tasty! Watching TV was a bit tricky, no signal for regular channels, so we relied on apps like ITV X and My5, but the internet was pretty patchy-probably just the location. Overall, it was a lovely week away, whether you want to explore or just relax in peace. We’d definitely come back!
Emma
Date of stay: 28th September 2024
We really enjoyed our stay at The Lodge. It’s stylish, super comfy and spotlessly clean. The hot tub was a real highlight-perfect for unwinding after days of exploring. One odd thing though, you have to bring your own robes to get out of the hot tub, which is unusual since other Hoseasons places usually provide them. We also let the staff know about a loose toilet seat and toilet roll holder via text, but never got a reply. Still, we’d go back!

Date of stay: 28th September 2024
We recently stayed at Herdwick Croft and overall, it was a decent holiday, but honestly, there were quite a few things that could have been better. The location was spot on, nestled next to a lovely stream, which made falling asleep pretty relaxing with the sounds of nature. That was definitely a highlight! We appreciated how private the lodge felt, not feeling overlooked at all, which is a big plus when you're on holiday. Plus, the proximity to Keswick and the lake was really convenient for exploring the area. However, we were pretty disappointed with the cleanliness of the place. At first glance, everything looked okay, with fresh bedding and tidy surfaces, but once we looked closer, it was a different story. In the en suite, we found toothpaste in the brush holder and some tiny silver peel-off lids from toiletries, which clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly. When the kids went to put their clothes away, they noticed long dark hairs in the drawers - not exactly what you want to see! The living room carpet was also covered in dog hairs, which might not bother everyone, but for us, it was a bit off-putting. It’s not immediately obvious, but if you sit on the floor, you definitely notice the hairs. The hot tub was another bit of a letdown. Despite being drained and refilled for each guest, when we finally opened it up, there was debris at the bottom and what looked like scum on the surface of the water. We were really looking forward to relaxing in it, but it wasn’t really usable in its current state. It’s such a shame because the potential is there - a canopy over it would make a huge difference, especially with the weather being so rotten for most of our stay. We couldn’t even use it most days, which was a bit frustrating. Another thing that bugged us was the lack of a welcome pack. We’ve stayed in plenty of self-catering places and this is the first time we’ve been left without even a basic coffee or tea starter. I had brought some pods for the coffee machine, but when we arrived, it turned out to be a different model, so my pods were useless. That was annoying! We did a shop beforehand, so we were okay, but it would’ve been nice to have a few essentials waiting for us, especially given the high price - this was the most expensive place we’ve stayed in the UK and honestly, that’s a bit steep for what you get. One small thing that would’ve made a difference is having a vacuum available for guests. Over the week, the floors got pretty grubby with crumbs and dirt tracked in. With the weather being so terrible most days, we couldn’t really keep on top of it, which made the place feel a bit dirtier than it should have. All in all, we’d come back to Herdwick Croft because we loved the location and the peaceful surroundings, but we’d probably pick a different lodge next time. It’s just a shame that a few simple improvements could make such a difference to the overall experience!

We had a really lovely stay at the lodge. It was spotlessly clean and had everything our family of four plus the dog needed. The location felt so peaceful and perfect for relaxing. We initially thought there would be walking trails nearby, but ended up driving to find good walks. Also, it’d be handy if there was a designated area for dogs to run off lead, since they must be kept on a lead everywhere else. Overall, a nice break, just a few small tweaks could make it even better!
Jamie
Date of stay: 18th August 2024
We stayed at this lodge recently and honestly, it felt just like being at home. Everything we needed was there-cutlery, crockery, a dishwasher, gas oven, fridge and freezer. The place was spotless and the hot tub was ready when we arrived, which was a bonus. The twin beds were a bit on the small side and a little close, so probably not ideal for older kids. A couple of minor things: the front door was a bit tricky to open and close, maybe needs a little fix and the fire extinguisher might need checking. Also, the bedroom door to the bathroom didn't lock, but it didn’t spoil our stay!

We had a lovely time at the lodge! It was spotlessly clean and super comfy. Everything was just right, though it’d be handy to have some hooks on the fence near the hot tub for towels and robes. Still, we really enjoyed our stay and would return!

We stayed in this place recently and honestly, it was spotless since it was brand new. Cleanliness is a biggie for us, so we were pleased. The fittings looked lovely and the furniture was really comfy - the sofa and bed were both spacious. It would’ve been perfect with a coffee machine, but the cooking facilities were decent enough. The only downside was the cupboards - they could have been better organised to fit groceries, since it felt like there was stuff piled everywhere. Hope they keep it as tidy as when we visited!
Alex
Date of stay: 6th May 2024
We recently stayed at this site and honestly, the place itself is lovely - really peaceful and well situated for exploring the area. The caravan was quite new and very attractive, plus the hot tub was a real highlight, especially since it felt quite private. The living space inside was super comfy, with nice sofas and a good dining area, perfect for relaxing after long walks. However, we did run into a few issues. When we arrived, the caravan had been cleaned, but there were quite a few dead flies on the floor, which was a bit off-putting. Also, on arrival, there was no electricity - no heating, which was a problem given how chilly it was that day. We spent ages trying to locate the fuse box and although a team member tried to help, she couldn’t find it either. The biggest problem was the smell - there was a strong drain odour that was noticeable in the caravan and even in the hot tub, which became unbearable by the second night. We ended up leaving early because of it and when we told someone on the team, they acknowledged the issue but didn't apologise or offer any compensation, which was pretty disappointing. Another minor gripe was the lack of essentials - no salt or condiments and only a small amount of toilet paper for two days, let alone our full stay. Overall, the site itself is lovely - quiet, well placed and clean - but the staff response and some of the little touches could definitely be improved. Still, we had decent weather for a change!

Really enjoyed our stay here! The lodge’s decor is modern and stylish and the furnishings are comfy. Only minor thing - we needed a couple more bowls for our family of four. Would stay again!
Vari
Beautiful caravan (Buttermere) and great location, very close to Lake which is walking distance. No shop onsite, and very little restaurant options for dinner in walking distance, still need the car. (Family of 4)
Emily
We loved our stay. Our dog loved it too and never normally settles when we’re away but she was right at home! The decked area was secure with a gate which made our lives so much easier! Clean, spacious, great location, lovely hot tub we will definitely be back!
Joanne
Excellent 3 night stay in the Buttermere lodge. Nice and quiet even though it was weekend. We didn't use the car at all as there's plenty to do within walking distance, and it was lovely to get in the hot tub in the evening. We'll definitely be back.
Shona
We loved our time at this lodge - spacious, decorated to a very high standard, quiet and not too far a drive to Keswick. The lodge was stunning and we received a very warm welcome from Laura and Dave Would definitely recommend.
Kirsty
Had amazing week (from 8th July 22) staying in "Buttermere Lodge". We had been searching for the perfect place to bring our dog. We have found a gem of a place. The holiday park is ideally located between Keswick and Cockermouth. And near the beautiful Bassenthwaite Lake. Our accommodation was modern, clean .... just perfect. It had everything you need for a self catering place. Supermarkets are in Cockermouth so we got stocked up. The on site guys, Laura and Dave were on hand if you needed them, and so friendly and helpful. We loved the hot tub!. We are going to book for next year. For anyone visiting, look after the accommodation and keep it nice for every visitor. Herdwick Croft is currently building a bistro at the front which will be an added bonus. There are lovely walks to go on around the site if you have a dog (or not). I would not hesitate to recommend Herdwick Croft lodges. Can't wait to come back! Obviously we weren't there to camp so cannot comment on the site or facilities (although the site where the caravans, tents were, looked nice). Some earlier reviews may say towels weren't provided. They were!. Although take your own for the hot tub. The lodge even had a washer/dryer, iron, small ironing board, clothes airer, hairdryer, and fully equipped kitchen. It was perfect!

Gorgeous place nestled in between one of the lakes and a distillery. Great for walkers and other lakes within 20/30 min drive.

Really enjoyed our holiday at herwick croft, the lodge was immaculate and had great views over skiddaw. Hot tub was brilliant too. Staff were friendly.

Lovely stay at herdwick Croft. Perfect location for visiting local attractions. Nearest shop is a 10 minute drive. The only recommendation I would have would be to supply more toilet rolls, bin bags and dishwasher tablets as only 1 supplied for a weeks stay. Also some small toiletries in the bathroom would be handy as no hand wash was supplied.

Great location and accommodation was very comfortable - no issues. We enjoyed the hot tub which was clean and well maintained. Would definitely return.

Herdwick Croft is a lovely quiet site, with beautiful surroundings. It sits on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake and it is just a short walk down to the water. There isn’t any restaurant/bar on site yet, however it is in the process of being built. There were recommendations of places to eat and drink within a short walk or drive so that wasn’t an issue for us. I can definitely recommend The Wheatsheaf Inn, the food was fantastic!

Stayed at the buttermere lodge for 7 nights and will definitely be returning to herdwick Croft in the future. The lodge and hot tub were clean and in good condition. The surrounding areas were stunning with a short drive to Keswick and beautiful walks. Perfect for couples, families and dogs.

Loved the Crummock Vip it had everything we needed. Nice quiet location but also close to places we wanted to visit. Staff on the site were very helpful and only a txt away if needed. Will be nice when the bistro/bar is finished which im sure we will be back to enjoy.
