Hermitage Castle is a semi-ruined stronghold in the remote valley of the Hermitage Water, in Scotland's wild border country. It was targeted for 400 years because of its role in controlling the Scottish Middle March, and it has a name as one of the most sinister and atmospheric castles in Scotland.
Tip: In the summer season (1 April to 31 October) it is covered by the Historic Environment Scotland Explorer Pass, but not in winter, so check before you go.

Caerlaverock is a moated castle on the southern coast of Scotland, about seven miles south of Dumfries. Its triangular shape is unique among British castles, and it has a wide moat, a twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements. First built in the 13th century, it was the stronghold of the Maxwell family and was besieged by the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
Tip: Head up to the South range for the best views over the moat, then follow the short nature trail to the older castle's foundations.

Brougham Castle is a red-sandstone castle standing near the site of a Roman fort, guarding a river crossing south-east of Penrith. It was founded in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont, and his great keep still dominates the site. The powerful Clifford family later added more buildings, including an unusual double gatehouse and the Tower of League.
Tip: Head up the spiral stairs to the top of the keep for panoramic views over the Eden Valley.

Lowther Castle is a ruined country house near Penrith, built in the early 19th century and left as a dramatic shell after the roof was removed and the building demolished in the 1950s. You can explore the ruins, then wander the 130 acres of gardens, which include the Parterre, the Garden-in-the-Ruins, the Rose Garden, wildflower meadows and rambling woodland.
Tip: Walk out to the Western Terrace for a spectacular view over the Lowther Valley to the Lake District mountains, and dress for all weathers.

A working Scottish distillery in Annan where guided tours end with tastings and a coffee shop stop.
Annandale Distillery in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, makes single malt Scotch whisky and describes itself as Scotland's only single cask single malt distillery. Every cask is bottled on its own, never vatted. The distillery was founded in 1836, closed in 1924 and was restored after 2007, and it now sits beside a visitor centre.
Tip: Finish your visit with a stop at the Maltings Coffee Shop.

Medieval castle ruins once home to Richard III, set in a public park beside Penrith station.
Penrith Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in the west of the town, on the edge of the Lake District. It was begun in the late 14th century by Ralph Neville to help defend the area against the Scots, and was later turned into a luxurious residence by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who became Richard III.
Tip: Parking is around the town, with only a few spaces at the park entrance, so be prepared to park nearby.

We was pleasantly surprised how lovely our Lodge was once we arrived. Very comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. Hot tub was a huge bonus and we used it regularly.
Amazing. Couldnt fault anything. Had the perfect chillled out break.

The lodge was great value for money. Spacious and plenty of storage and very clean. Hot tub was great although there was limited places to dry towels, it could of done with an airer.

Lodge was absolutely stunning, had everything we needed (other than a hoover, that definitely would be a handy thing with us having kiddies!) but its neither here nor there for that! we managed without, kept sweeping and we really didn't mind. The lodge was perfect, hot tub well maintained, everything clean and fresh. Such a lovely lodge, and great for the money, we will return!
Stayed in the Athena VIP lodge for 4 nights. Booked pretty last minute and was skeptical having seen some of the recent negative online reviews.However, we were so pleasantly surprised upon arrival. Lodge was gorgeous, spotlessly clean and well equipped with everything we needed. Hot tub was nice and warm and was checked daily by staff.The site itself was quiet and peaceful. It's without amenities like a clubhouse and swimming pool, but that wasn't an issue to us at all.The main downside was that phone signal and WiFi was pretty rubbish. It would be good to have actual WiFi rather than 4G-based broadband (because the 4G doesn't really work)We will 100% be returning to the area and staying at Green Meadows in the near future - we enjoyed every minute of our trip.
Very nice and clean. Has everything you need. Only thing we did think would possibly improve is a small hoover of sorts. We were wanting to give the place a once over as we have 2 kids and there crumbs etc.

Lodge Lodge was spacious and clean, hot tub was fine, beds were comfy. Everything needed was there accept there was no frying pan in lodge so went and purchased one
Lodge had everything you needed, modern, comfortable. The large deck was great and was fully enclosed round the hot tub for more privacy.
Lodge was lovely. Lovely peaceful surroundings. Kept to a high standard around the park. Staff all very helpful. Hot tub was great. If your looking for somewhere not to far away from shops etc and want to chill this is your calling. Please go . X
Great week away Good base camp
Caravan/lodge was not luxury and the one shown in pictures that we booked, and had smaller bedrooms. Although surfaces and floors were cleaned the caravan furniture and carpets were very dirty, missing and broken blinds throughout and front door not closing properly. No Internet
Lodge very modern & clean.Perfect addition is the hot tub.Had all equipment needed.Couple of niggles - Blind kept falling down in bath room, WiFi & tv signal not the best & kick board in kitchen kept falling down everytime you opened the dishwasher. These things wouldn't stop us staying again for third time.
Just missing a bread knife
Although it was a lovely relaxing holiday & we were so lucky to have had great weather for the week we were there, we feel the lodge was tidy, clean & comfortable but more attention to detail could be required at times as we spent most of two days waiting for a plumber to fix a pipe under the sink. Even although it's self catering there could be more cooking utensils eg wooden spoons, slotted spoon, sieve/colander. There is a good sized fridge freezer but no cupboard space for storing foodstuffs.The hot tub was checked every day & the girls were all lovely. East access to Carlisle with supermarkets within driving distance as well as the M6.Various pubs within driving distance for a pub lunch or evening meal. If you're looking for a relaxing peaceful holiday with no entertainment on site then it's worth a try. We felt welcomed on site & enjoyed the peace & quiet . Also able to take our dog which was great
Lovely clean Lodge, had all the extras you need loved the added touch of a dressing gown and slippers for each adult we stopped in 64 not as shown in the image but so welk located and peaceful . The site staff are first class and very helpful. We will come again soon

Fabulous lodge. Fully equipped and spotlessly clean. Large hot tub. Free EV charging. Dog walking field. Peaceful location but plenty of shops and walks within 10 minute drive. Would highly recommend.
Very tight squeeze for 6 adults and a dog, lots of things were broken/broke while we were there (towel rail, fascia in kitchen, leg on table, bathroom blind, chair, boiler, cooker knob). Pool shallow, no instructions, told we couldnt turn of auto so no bubbles. Only refilled once.
We had a fantastic weekend here! Definitely planning to return later in the year for sure.

We had a fabulous holiday, the lodge had everything we needed. The location of the site was great, we were able to explore the local area which the kids enjoyed. The hot tub was kept topped up and the maintenance staff were lovely. The dog field was ideal. It would be nice if there was a play area for the kids but we booked it knowing there wasnt one so that isnt a complaint just a suggestion. We would come back again as we loved it.

We recently stayed in this lovely one-bedroom lodge and honestly, it exceeded our expectations. The place was spotless and the kitchen was surprisingly well equipped with all the utensils we needed. The decking area with the hot tub was a real highlight, though adding a small table would make it perfect since there are already two chairs out there. The bedroom was really spacious, with a big wardrobe, but a few shelves or more hangers would be handy. Having Netflix and Prime on the TV was a great bonus for winding down in the evenings. All in all, we had a fantastic break and wouldnt hesitate to come back!
What a lovely 1 bedroom lodge. It was exceptionally clean and the kitchen well stocked with utensils. We use lodges in other parts of the UK on a regular basis and this is by far the best one we have stayed in. The decking area is really good with a lovely hot tub. It could be enhanced with a table to go with the 2 chairs already there. The bedroom is spacious with a large wardrobe - shelving for smalls and clothes hangers would be useful. TV with Netflix and Prime access is a bonus. In all we had a super break and would definitely book again.
Had a great holiday here park is amazing the lodges are Absolutely stunning and very new and luxurious with the added bonus of your own hot tub beds were very comfortable we stayed in 3 bedroom lodge 2 bedrooms en suite very spacious also extra bonus dog friendly too and dogs have there own field to walk around and it was kept clean as well lodges very clean and plenty of utensils for cooking truly amazing lodges staff extremely friendly and they did excellent job checking hot tubs for chemicals and topping them topped up with water as well the grounds were kept in excellent condition too it was that good we have already booked to come back we would definitely recommend these lodges the are so peaceful and relaxing and there’s plenty to do around Carlisle and surrounding areas plenty of shops too and great garden Center close by for a excellent breakfast or coffee and homemade cakes
Lodge was brand new, beautiful and modern, hot tub fabulous, beds were super comfy and the staff were helpful and friendly. Carlisle is only a short drive away, city is fab with lots of great shops and restaurants.
We had a lovely weekend at Green Meadows Country Park in the Lakewood VIP Pet Lodge. The lodge was gorgeous, so modern and clean considering it was a pet lodge! The hot tub was a great addition and the water fountain at the front of the lodge made it very relaxing. Would highly recommend:)
I would 100% recommend this park. Absolutely spotless caravan. Hot tub maintained daily. Complimentary bath robes, slippers, towels and a lovely bottle of cava on arrival. Cannot wait to go back

Very lovely holiday park and lodge. Staff were very friendly and welcoming upon arrival. As the lodge was so new, there were a couple of things that needed sorting, but nothing that made our time any less enjoyable. Would definitely go back!!
We arrived later than planned to discover that the van we booked had been given to someone else
But after a bit of time we were given another one no problem. The lodge was fine but felt there could have been a bit more facilities on site such as convenience shop, play park for kids and maybe a restaurant as you really had to drive into carlisle to get anything and better signposted from motorway
The lodge could have had more hooks for hanging things back of bedroom door didn’t have any
